american splendor

"okay. this guy here, he's our man, all grown up and going nowhere. although he's a pretty scholarly cat, he never got much of a formal education. for the most part, he's lived in shit neighborhoods, held shit jobs, and he's now knee-deep into a disastrous second marriage. so, if you're the kind of person looking for romance or escapism or some fantasy figure to save the day... guess what? you've got the wrong movie."

this film is based off a true story about the american splendor comics and its creator, harvey pekar. basically harvey was an average man...worked as a file clerk in a hospital in virginia, divorced twice, kind of a loser. he found his job and life in general very boring and monotonous, so he lost himself in hobbies such as music, reading, collecting odd things from thrift stores, and comic books. just to summarize, he decided to write a comic book series based off his ordinary life which turns out being a great success. i enjoyed this film thoroughly. creatively made and quite amusing. i didn't know about harvey pakar at all before i watched this movie so i found it quite fascinating. directed by shari springer berman, starring paul giamatti.

the real harvey pekar
